Geek Out

Found Something Else to Geek Out About

I have a few things on my geek out list, things I just love. When a geek out attack happens, it is difficult to keep my budding minimalist philosophy. I make a conscious decision that I don’t need stuff, but when faced with the object of my geekiness…

Now, I have something new to add to the geek out list. Before we get to the new thing, let’s look at what already made the list.

I absolutely love bags. I love all bags of all sizes and shapes. I love backpacks and messenger bags and purses. It is so hard not to look at them when they are near, even harder not to buy.

Of course, as a reader, I geek out about books. I mean, what self-respecting reader doesn’t? I am not alone when I say I love that first moment when you walk into a book store and breathe in the smell of ink and paper. If the store has a coffee shop, even better.

I love all things paper and pens. As a reader and a writer, it kind of goes with the territory, does it not? I love folders and files and little plastic boxes with dividers to put in drawers. I love organizational things, though I can’t really say I am all that organized. I love paperclips and binders and staplers (do not compare me to the stapler guy in Office Space). Put me in an office supply store and I want to buy everything. Even if I have no use for it. It doesn’t matter, I want it.

I love home improvement stores, too. Strolling down the aisles looking at tools, hardware, and nails. I could look at paint samples and flooring all day. My favorite are the power tools. I can remember the exact moment I fell in love with power tools. I was drilling a hole in a piece of wood and during the process and when it was over, I knew I altered that wood forever. I made my mark. Interestingly, it is the same feeling I get when I put pencil to paper. For some reason, pens don’t have the same effect, but I still love them.

Today, I found a new love. For the past several weeks, I have been taking a class for basic emergency response, something I wanted to do for a long time. I needed a couple of things to prepare for our final exercise before we move on to the next phase. As I am standing there looking for what I need, I see an entire wall of goodies I just must have. I see now why our instructor said you could easily spend thousands of dollars on this stuff. It is crazy cool stuff. After a lot of internal struggling, I walked away with only the three items I came to purchase. So, now I have another thing to add to my list that causes total geek out, survival gear.

What do you completely geek out over?
